Day Two, Evening, in Mexico City


On the evening of the 23rd, we embarked on a fascinating tour of the sociopolitical history of Mexico City. The highlight of the tour was a description of the #yosoy132 student movement, an ongoing protest that addresses the democratization of Mexico and its media. The Bicentennial Pillar of Light, according to our guide, was slated to cost $134million drawing protest and derision from the general public. Despite public doubt, the government pushed the project through ultimately costing U.S. $610 million. While it was ostensibly commerating Mexican independence, Jakie described the monument as “That President’s trophy”, to which Sergio agreed. Learn more here:
